What is the maximum age/height that a child can fit somewhat reasonably (for short trips) in the back of a 997 or 991? The adorable knuckleheads pictured above are my progeny, currently 8, 6 and almost 2, and I'm just wondering if a used 911 should be on my radar for the years after car seats and before high school.
I'm 6'1", with a 34" inseam. Can a human (with legs) sit behind me in this car?

I'm 5'8"/average weight and I fit in the back of a 991 pretty easily. But it was tight.

I've been in the back of my uncle's and I'm 6'1". It was tight, but with my aunt in the passenger seat, who is shorter than me by a fair amount, and her seat moved up a bit I was okay. Not the most comfortable trip of my life, but it could have been worse.

Yeah, I mean, it will work in a pinch, but the backrest is completely vertical (at least in 996s), and I mean, straight up and down. That might not sound weird, but it is. Very, very uncomfortable.

Tight is not a big deal. Honestly, we're talking about short, occasional trips to/from school, practice and other activities, mostly on city streets.
My wife's mom-mobile will be used for the vast majority of shuttling and longer trips.

Builds character, right?
And 997 packaging is pretty much identical to 996, yes?

My neighbor has a 996, his two kids (8 and 5) both fit in the rear seats. They go out for family drives. :)

About tree-fiddy.
It was then that I realized the child in my back seat was this huge creature, a giant crustacean from the Paleolithic era. That damned loch ness monster had tricked me again! I said, "Get out my car, you loch ness monster! Get your own goddamn backseat!"

Well I'm 5' 8" and I've ridden in the back of a 911... it sucked and I was basically crotch to seat back, but I still fit.

It may not of helped I had a longboard on my lap too. Yet it was the single most fun I've ever had in a back seat! I say go for it, it's semi comfortable once you figure out how to position yourself.

My friend's mom growing up had a 911 GT2 and would pick up my friend and his sister from school in it. I've crammed myself into the back of a 997 Cabriolet sideways at an auto show and I'm 6'5". If the front passenger is short, you could probably take 3 people including you without issue. Somebody might be able to fit behind you in a coupe if they have small legs or you have a sawzall...

My advice? Unless you're really set on a 911 just get an M3/4. Even the coupe and convertible have much more rear seat legroom than the 911. I don't know how tall your family is but I could barely fit in the back of a 911 behind another tall person by the first year of high-school and not comfortably. Best thing to do is to go to an auto show or dealership and sit in it with your kids.
I don't think there's a two-door car that seats five but you probably know that.
When I was growing up parents actually used to have three cars: the sporty convertible my dad drove, the practical wagon for my mom to drive, and the large luxury sedan for any time we were going out to dinner or leaving the city. I will probably entertain a similar setup when I have children.

The car pictured is an E90 M3, which I love, and I'm not planning to get rid of any time soon, but I still keep a list in my mind of theoreticals....
Thanks for the feedback.

Have you considered a Panamera S/4S/Turbo? I know they get a lot of flack for their looks but they really do drive well. Still front-engined but unquestionably a Porsche.

I'm too fond of my clutch pedal and gear lever.
That said, if I could have a light, visceral, manual two seater (Elise?), and pair that with the upcoming Panamera Sport Turismo that it seems more likely they might actually build...

Yes, definitely after car seats (kids wouldn't have room for legs with a convertible seat) and maybe in a booster. A 997 and especially a 991 (more rear seat room) would be good. Even 996. 993 and before is only okay if you want to torture your children.
And as Clarkson says, you need to have fairly thin children.

It's theoretically possible to find a stick-shift Panamera but only just; they're extremely rare. Definitely not something to rely on but if one pops up for sale in your area you should certainly go check it out. I've don't think I've even seen one in person.
As for having an Elise, at that point you might as well just pair it with an SUV for the added utility.
Other considerations are Godzilla and the fantastic 1M but they don't fare much better on rear-seat room as the 911 and can't offer the same level of refinement as a 997 or 991.

Didn't even realize it was an option. Only with the V6?
I just picked up an '03 Pathfinder for winter/light off-roading/camping/dog duty, and my wife currently has an '08 Mazda CX-9 AWD, so we've got that covered.
I've never been interested in a GT-R, even thought they're undeniably amazing.
Honestly, I can't think of one other car on the road right now that I'd be anxious to swap my M3 out for, considering what I need it to do. The M235i and M2 are intriguing - maybe that's where I'll end up in 5 years. Or RS3 sedan?

I read that the manual can't be had with AWD models and I wouldn't be surprised if it was V6 only.
I would be surprised if the RS3 came to the US at all, let alone with a manual gearbox. Either way it will be a step down from an M3. Same can be said for the M235i.
